The story is set in Japan in the middle ages. Tsujimura Genzo is a puppeteer whose heart has become as hard as stone due to the murder of his beloved wife. In each story, Genzo brings the dead back alive as puppets, and by doing so, he is able to solve mysterious incidents or help a dead man's soul. Kikuhime, a young "tomboy" princess is Genzo's companion, who helps him fight the villains.

Celestin, a young man abandoned as a baby and found wrapped in a fine cloth, tries to marry his way into the aristocratic lifestyle he considers his birthright while popular revolution is beginning to stir in the streets...

Kyoya Iida is a hard-nosed detective from the Shinjuku Police precinct. He is known in the force as an unreasonable type who would use lethal force to solve cases, making him unpopular with the enlisted and high-ranking officers in the National Police Agency.Despite this, there are some in the force who admire Iida for his bravery and cleverness in using lethal force to solve criminal cases whenever legal means are met with a dead end.
